The Caribou Charity Ride starts at the Best Western Nor'Wester Resort Hotel on Highway 61, where all distances will ride out through the rolling hills of Oliver Paipoonge Township near Thunder Bay, Ontario.
The 50K event leaves the Best Western Nor’Wester Hotel on Hwy 61 and travels south to HWY 130 to Barrie Drive where you then turn left. Ride west on the small rolling hills to the end of Barrie Drive where you will turn right on Hwy 588. Travel north on Hwy 588 and just before you come to Stanley you will encounter a long descent that you should use caution and ride safely in single file and not spread out across the road since there will be vehicular traffic. Just after the Stanley bridge, there is an aid station on the left hand side of the road. Here you can get a cool drink of water and enjoy other goodies and fresh fruit. From the aid station you head east on River Road and when you hit Barrie Drive you turn left and follow the signs Hanna Road/Candy Mountain Drive/Gillespie Road/Hwy 61 route back to the Nor’Wester Hotel.
The 75K event leaves the Best Western Nor’Wester Hotel on Hwy 61 and travels south to Gillespie Road where you turn left. Ride up Gillespie Rd and turn left on Candy Mountain Drive and then right on Hanna Road to Barrie Drive. Continue on Barrie Drive until you hit River Road where you turn right and ride to Stanley where you will encounter the first aid station. Continue riding west up a long hill on Hwy 588 followed by rolling terrain that leads to the intersection of Hwy 588 and Hwy 595. Just before this intersection there will be an aid station for a cold drink and some snacks to help you through the next few kilometers. Immediately after you turn right on Hwy 595 there is a long and fast descent into Hymers and like the the old saying, “what goes down must come up!” So just after you pass through Hymers there is quite a steep hill that is not very long but is a good test for most cyclists but once you are over the top, the road is fairly flat with rolling terrain similar to Barrie Road. Continue north down Hwy 595 until it intersects Hwy 590. Here you will turn right and you will now be heading east towards Kakabeka Falls. Just before Hwy 590 meets up with Hwy 11/17 there is a long and fairly steep descent and caution should be used to keep your speed at a rate you are comfortable with. As always, ride safely in single file as this section of highway can get quite busy on a weekend. At the bottom of the hill turn right onto Hwy 11/17 and proceed east over the Kam River bridge and through the community of Kakabeka Falls for approximately 7kms until you come to Hwy 588, the turn off to Stanley. Proceed down the road and hill, past the Stanley Hotel and across the bridge and then turn left on River Road. Immediately after turning onto River Road there is the first aid station you passed on the left hand side of the road. Stop and smell the roses and enjoy a snack. Proceed east on River Road until you come to Barrie Drive where you will turn left and head back on Hanna Road/Candy Mountain Drive/Gillespie Road/Hwy 61 route back to the Nor’Wester Hotel.
The 100k follows the same route as the 75k event however when you turn on get Hwy 61 from Gillespie Road you will proceed east for approximately 800 meters and turn right on Hacquoil Road. Ride to the end of Hacquoil Road (approx. 2 kms) where it takes a sharp right onto Boundary Drive. Continue on Boundary Drive for 5.4 kms until you insect with Hwy 61. Turn right to head east and ride back to the Nor’Wester Hotel.
